Black Nab at Saltwick Bay

Not done much in the way of landscape photos as I’ve been a bit busy with the weddings but I thought I would try and get up to Saltwick bay near Whitby and get a few seascape type photos. The east coast of the North York Moors is a great place to take photos, plenty of little bays be it sandy, rocky or stoney. As it generally faces east (north in parts) it’s ideal for sunrises and as summer rolls on, sunsets. I went up with a friend and we camped with the intention of getting a sunset in the evening and the sunrise the following morning. Didn’t get a sunset due in part to the miserable rain and part to the folk festival going on at all the pubs! But we managed to get up and get to Saltwick Bay for the mist to lift and the sun to come up.
We got the typical shot of Admiral Von Tromp’s wreck lit by the low sun and as it got a little higher we got a couple of longer exposures with the Lee Big Stopper. I’d have liked to have done the longer exposure stuff before the sun peeked over the clouds but it was a bit grey and misty and my mind wasn’t quite as focused as it should have been. The shot of Black Nab was taken at ISO100, 16mm, f/13 for 30 seconds, I would have preferred f/16 for a little longer but I didn’t have my cable release so no bulb mode (I must reorder one now).
It’s always a little disappointing when you don’t get the shot you set out for but you often come away with something you were not expecting. Getting yourself out there is the main thing, fine tuning your compositions and learning from little mistakes ultimately means when the conditions are perfect you have the skills, technical knowledge and experience to take a great shot.
