Raatings rat

The world's most powerful credit-rating nerd -- his finger poised on the doomsday button of the US economy -- says all this talk about a temporary solution to the country's deficit and debt ceiling isn't good for those looking to hold on to Uncle Sam's AAA debt rating.

David T. Beers, the Standard & Poor's executive who will ultimately decide if the US debt gets downgraded to AA -- forcing Americans to pay more for almost any type of loan while possibly leading the stock markets lower -- is the otherwise anonymous analyst thrust into the spotlight.

David Beers

Reuters

David Beers

The 56-year-old will decide, possibly in the next week, if he will take the US credit rating down from AAA -- where it has rested since 1941.

"Ultimately, we've got to look at the overall plan to make a judgment as to whether it's likely to make a difference in the rising US debt," Beers told an interviewer yesterday.

While he refused to throw his support behind either the Democrats' or Republicans' plan, Beers said that passing a temporary solution that will force the country -- and his ratings agency -- to revisit the issue in several months "would be negative" in his downgrade review.

"We would have to come back and go through all this again and again," he told CNBC.

Beers wrote the book 15 years ago on sovereign defaults. One chapter in the manual, published by S&P, eerily predicted the perfect storm for an economic implosion. It's exactly the scenario facing Washington today -- political gridlock stops the bill-paying machine that a government otherwise can readily handle.

"A government can default on some or all of the obligations for political reasons, even when it possesses the financial capacity for timely debt service," he wrote, adding it causes "erosion of public trust in political institutions . . . and fertile ground for a sovereign default."

While Beers crunches numbers and Washington politicians continue their dysfunctional ways, markets get more and more jittery. The Dow Jones industrial average fell yesterday for the fourth straight day -- each day posting a larger decline.

The Dow closed down 1.6 percent yesterday to 12,302.55. The S&P 500 index was off 2.0 percent.

Meanwhile, S&P Chief Executive Deven Sharma, appearing before the House Financial Services Committee yesterday, denied accusations by Republican lawmakers that the ratings agency has been colluding with the Obama administration to gain leverage in the deficit talks. tharp@nypost.com

10 foods that promote brain health

By Brandi, selected from Diets in Review

(Photo: Getty Images)

(Photo: Getty Images)

More from Care2 Green Living blog

Who doesn’t want to become smarter? Who wants to look better or feel healthier? Many recent studies have shown how certain nutrients can positively affect the brain, specifically in areas of the brain related to cognitive processing or feelings and emotions.

Generally speaking, you want to follow a healthy diet for your brain that will lead to strong blood flow, maintenance of mental sharpness, and reduction of the risk of heart disease and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

We know that foods play a great role in our brain, as concluded in several studies led by a phenomenal neuroscientist at UCLA, Gomez Pinilla.

According to one study, the super-fats your brain needs most are omega-3 fatty acids. Your brain converts them into DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) which enhances neuronal communication and promotes neuronal growth.

Food and nutrients represent fuel to our bodies the same way that when we use our car we need to fill the gas tank. Unfortunately, we generally take better care of our cars than our bodies. Why is that? We are hearing frequently that consuming the right nutrients can help our health, aging process, and more efficient brain-body functioning.

With that said, I want to share with you 10 foods you must keep in your diet to maintain brain health:

1. Apples: Eating an apple a day protects the brain from oxidative damage that causes neurodegenerative diseases such Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. This magical nutrient that acts as protection is quercetin, which is a phytonutrient.

2. Asparagus: Asparagus is rich in folic acid, which is essential for the metabolism of the long chain fatty acids in your brain.

3. Lean Beef: Lean beef is rich in vitamin B12, iron and zinc. These vitamins and minerals have been shown to maintain a healthy neural tissue.

4. Blueberries and strawberries: Studies show that people who eat berries improve their memory and their motor skills. In addition, their antioxidant properties can protect your brain from the oxidative process.

5. Dark chocolate: Dark chocolate offers incredible concentration powers. It is a very powerful antioxidant containing natural stimulants that increase the production of feel-good endorphins. Trick: You need to find dark chocolate with less than 10 grams of sugar per serving for optimal benefits.

6. Salmon: Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which studies have shown to be essential for brain function.

7. Dried oregano: Certain spices have powerful antioxidant properties. In several studies, oregano was shown to have 40 times more antioxidant properties than apples, 30 times more than potatoes, 12 times more than oranges, and 4 times more than that of blueberries or strawberries.

8. Walnuts: Walnuts are rich in protein and contain omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins E and B6, which all promote healthy neural tissue.

9. Whole grains: Whole grains deliver fiber and vitamin E that help promote cardiovascular health, which helps improve the circulation to the brain.

10. Yogurt: Yogurt and other dairy foods are filled with protein and vitamin B that are essential to improve the communication between nerve cells.

Make sure that from now on you select and plan a great menu that include these brain foods. Life is about choices and selecting the right nutrients can play a key role in your health.

Written by Michael Gonzalez-Wallace, who is the author of "Super Body, Super Brain." You can read more from him at www.superbodysuperbrain.com or pick up his book "Super Body, Super Brain."

Giardini Naxos (Me) -

Giardini Naxos (Me) -

Giardini Naxos is a comune in the Province of Messina on the island of Sicily in Italy. It is situated on the coast of the Ionian Sea on a bay which lies between Cape Taormina and Cape Schis. Today it is a popular seaside-resort.
Founded by Thucles the Chalcidian in 734 BC, Naxos was never a powerful city, but its temple of Apollo Archegetes, protecting deity of all the Greek colonies, gave it prominence in religious affairs. Leontini and Catania were both colonized from here. Hippocrates, tyrant of Gela, captured it in 494 BC. Its opposition to Syracuse ultimately led to its capture and destruction in 403 BC at the hands of Dionysius the tyrant, after it had supported Athens during that city's disastrous Sicilian Expedition. Though the site continued to be inhabited, most activity shifted to neighbouring Tauromenium.
In 1544, following the raids by Turkish corsair, Barbarossa Kheir-ed-Din, several military buildings were constructed to protect Cape Schis from the Barbary pirates who continued to attack and plunder the coastal villages. These were Schis Castle which was rebuilt from an earlier 13th century castle, Schis fort, and Vignazza Tower. The latter is a quadrangular watchtower which served to patrol the coast south of Port Schis; if any pirate boats were sighted, the observers inside the tower could alert the villagers and neighbouring watchtowers by sending out smoke signals. Vignazza Tower is located in the Recanati area of Giardini Naxos, but is not open to the public.
Prior to the early 1970s, Giardini Naxos was a quiet fishing village. Now it is a popular tourist destination, famous for its beaches, panoramic view of the bay and surrounding hills, and its small, but bustling fishing port. It attracts foreign visitors and Italians alike, many of whom own summer residences in the comune. The seafront, Via Tysandros, is lined with hotels, smaller pensions, pubs, restaurants and pizzerias.

Monschau Castle, overlooking the city, dates from the thirteenth century. It is mentioned for the first time in 1198. From 1433, the castle is owned by the Dukes of Jlich. In 1543, Emperor Charles V besieged, took and plundered the city. The castle, however, remained the home until 1609 Jlich, then he was integrated into the Palatinate-Neuburg. In 1795, France took the region, and under its French name Montjoie, made capital of the canton. The area became Prussian in 1815, and Monschau was named capital of the district, the Kreis Montjoie. In 1918, William II gave him back the name of Monschau. Eastern boundary of the Allied offensive in December 1944, the city was one that served as a rear base against the German offensive, during the Battle of the Ardennes.

Hungary - Budapest - Twilight over The Hungarian Parliament reflected in Danube River

photo

Hungary - Budapest - Twilight over The Hungarian Parliament reflected in Danube River

The Hungarian Parliament Building (Hungarian: Orszghz, literally country house) is the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary, one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings, a notable landmark of Hungary and a popular tourist destination of Budapest. It lies in Lajos Kossuth Square, on the bank of the Danube, in Budapest. It is currently the largest building in Hungary. Similar to the Palace of Westminster, the Parliament Building is in the Gothic Revival style; it has a symmetrical facade and a central dome. It is 268 m (879 ft) long and 123 m (404 ft) wide. Its interior includes 10 courtyards, 13 passenger and freight elevators, 27 gates, 29 staircases and 691 rooms (including more than 200 offices). With its height of 96 m (315 ft), it is one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest, along with Saint Stephen's Basilica. The number 96 refers to the nation's millennium, 1896, and the conquest of the later Kingdom of Hungary in 896. The main faade faces the River Danube, but the official main entrance is from the square in front of the building. Inside and outside, there are altogether 242 sculptures on the walls.

Camera Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II; Lens: 24.00 - 105.00 mm; Focal length: 60.00 mm; Aperture: 20; Exposure time: 32.0 s; ISO: 100

Olympic Logo Strays From Tradition

VANCOUVER, British Columbia—Matthias Heimel has the Olympics figured out. The German spectator knows his way to the ice rink where his country's hockey team plays. He can get around downtown Vancouver.

But he's less certain about the Vancouver Games emblem, which can be seen from one end of the Olympic host city to the other on hats, jackets and shot glasses, and in monumental statues made of everything from chocolate to empty shipping containers. "It looks like an alien," says Mr. Heimel.

Inuit Signpost Becomes Logo of Vancouver Olympics

The Inukshuk, a traditional Inuit signpost made of stones, is the official logo for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. WSJ's Phred Dvorak explains reaction to the use of the rock piles to represent the Games.

Olympic logos and mascots usually get plenty of attention, from Moscow's cuddly 1980 teddy bear to London 2012's Day-Glo emblem, whose pink jagged design sparked a flurry of criticism from comparisons to a broken swastika to claims an animated version caused epileptic seizures. Canada's choice of emblem is among the most curious: It's a pile of rocks.

An inukshuk is a stack of stones traditionally used by the Inuit of the arctic to mark anything from a hunting spot to a food cache. In 2005, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the Olympics chose a multicolored humanoid version of an inukshuk as the games' official 2010 emblem. That sparked an inukshuk boom in Canada that has reached far from the frozen tundra where the figures originated—and precipitated its share of controversy.

In Vancouver, the official inukshuk logo can be found on everything from key chains and T-shirts to rain gear for dogs.

Similar rock piles have inspired unofficial products—from $6 bottle openers to the Inukie Cookie designed by the creator of the Vancouver 2010 logo, which lets you build your own inukshuk out of maple-flavored shortbread.

The Vancouver Aquarium has unveiled a 10-foot-high inukshuk made out of 4,368 cans of sustainably fished salmon and tuna. That one looks more like a Japanese robot, admits aquarium spokesman Kent Hurl. "From far away, it kind of looks like a Transformer," he says.

Other rock piles are sprouting up across Canada, as emblems of the Canada Speed Skating team and latest Group of Seven finance ministers meeting. Cities including Niagara Falls, in Ontario, and La Ronge, in Saskatchewan, have commissioned massive stone statues to commemorate the passing of the Olympic torch through town. Home-goods store Canadian Tire Corp. says its plastic $38 Inukshuk garden statue is a top seller, along with its Golfing Gnomes and Canadian Moose.

In the Inuktitut language, inukshuk means "something that substitutes for a person." (For the grammatical record: One inukshuk. Many inukshuit.) Archaeologists say some piles up north have been around for thousands of years. Luke Suluk, president of the Inuit Heritage Trust, says there are many old inukshuit around his home in Arviat, on the western Hudson Bay.

Some mark boat landings, Mr. Suluk says. Others point out caribou routes or good camping spots; a few memorialize local tragedies such as illness or starvation.

While old versions were meant to stand in for a person, the latest ones are increasingly anthropomorphic: The Michelin Man meets Stonehenge. And as the things sprout all over southern Canada, some Inuit are bemused.

"It can be misleading," says Mr. Suluk, explaining that Inuit don't build inukshuit indiscriminately. "All Inuit are told not to make any inukshuk without a purpose."

Elena Rivera MacGregor, the designer of the Vancouver logo, had never seen a real one up north. Her inspiration was a big gray granite statue by her home in Vancouver, built for the city's 1986 Expo as an expression of northern hospitality and friendship.

Ms. MacGregor created a multicolored version: two vertical blocks for legs, a horizontal chunk for a torso, a longer horizontal for outspread arms and, for a head, a crowning block with a gouge for a mouth. She dubbed it Ilanaaq, or "friend" in Inuktitut.

"When you find an inukshuk in the snow, you find friendship, shelter," she says. "The inukshuk kind of gives you a hug."

Not everyone found the idea so cuddly. When the logo was unveiled, Mark Busse, then-head of British Columbia's graphic-design association, was quoted in press reports as calling the logo a "cutesy little smiley-faced Pac-Man on a pile of stones." ("It's grown on me," Mr. Busse says now.)

Some Inuit elders, meanwhile, protested that the humanoid design isn't authentic. Others fret the original meaning is being lost. "Inuit are concerned that inukshuk are being used everywhere without having much meaning or respect to Inuit," says Mr. Suluk.

All that hasn't damped the appeal, in part because an inukshuk is pretty easy to make. Touchstone Site Contractors Inc., an Ontario provider of commercial landscaping and security fencing, had never made a stone sculpture before it landed the contract for the Niagara Falls inukshuk. Office manager Brandon Bradley whipped the design up himself on AutoCAD.

"As long as you keep it somewhat proportional—that's it," he says.

Inukshuit have also been popping up along the highways in central Ontario during the past few years. The stone piles have drawn the wrath of some environmentalists who have complained on blogs that they're eyesores and that building them damages local rock formations from which they say the raw materials have been taken.

On the streets of Vancouver these days, it's hard to go a few blocks without bumping into inukshuit. Some 1,000 Inuit carvers in the arctic territory of Nunavut have been conscripted to make authentic inukshuit for sale at the Olympics as well, says Dennis Kim, head of merchandising for the Vancouver Organizing Committee. A 15½-inch statue goes for about $1,880.

Vancouver's souvenir shops are selling inukshuk statuettes made of pewter, glass, crystal, wood and British Columbian jade, as well as a full collection of inukshuk snow globes and playing cards.

Then there's the monumental approach. In Vancouver's downtown shopping district, the display window of chocolatier Daniel boasts a 320-pound inukshuk made of solid Belgian chocolate. The shipping hub of Richmond, just south of Vancouver, has built a six-story inukshuk out of several empty cargo containers.

So look out, maple leaf.

Cameron Dix, the manager in Vancouver of one of Canada's biggest souvenir trade shows, says the ramp-up in inukshukery he has seen since last year points to a bigger destiny for the inukshuk.

"It's become a Canadian symbol," he says.

Kim Wins Figure Skating Gold

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The normally unflappable Kim Yu-Na of South Korea burst into tears Thursday, after a flawless performance that won her the Olympic gold medal in women's figure skating. Ms. Kim, who scored a record 228.56 points for her two days of skating, said she didn't really know why emotion overcame her at the end of her free-skate program. But Ms. Kim, 19, also spoke of how hard it was to take in victory she's been training for, for years.

Olympic Medalists on Figure Skating's New Judging

3:06

Former Olympic medal winners Sasha Cohen, Katarina Witt, Michelle Kwan and Peggy Fleming comment on the judging rules for figure skating and the impact on skaters.

"Actually, I still can't believe that I did what I wanted to do at the Olympics," Ms. Kim said in English, at a press conference after her victory. "I've been dreaming about this moment. I can't believe this is not a dream any more." Ms. Kim left no points behind on the ice, as she skated one perfect jump after another, including the triple flip, which had been a nemesis both to her and her coach, former Olympian Brian Orser.

A series of minute mistakes set her closest rivals even further behind her in the final tally than they were after Tuesday's short program. Japan's Mao Asada took the silver, with 205.5 points, after two slight slips.

Ms. Asada, 19, was visibly upset after her turn on the ice, telling reporters she was happy with her two triple axels – a difficult jump that only she performed in the competition – but not with the rest of her performance.

She said she got nervous during the second half of the program, after successfully completing the most difficult part of her skate. "I'm just full of regrets because of the errors that I made," she said. Ms. Asada appeared more composed at a subsequent press conference, saying she was very happy to win her medal, and proud to have landed three triple axels in the two days of Olympic competition.

Even Ms. Kim underestimated what she'd be capable of Thursday. She said after the performance that she was expecting a long-program score of 140 instead of the 150.06 she received. "It's almost as close as the men's score," she said. But Ms. Kim said she isn't planning to return long-term yet to the country where she's become an instant hero for winning its first medal in figure skating. Instead, she said she's going to continue training for the World Championships in Toronto, where she's practiced since 2006.

Canada's Joannie Rochette, 24, who stole the hearts of the audience for continuing to skate after the recent death of her mother, won the bronze with 202.64 points. "My dream is she would always be by my side on a night like this," she said of her mother. "I feel proud and the result did not matter. I'm happy to be on the podium. It was a lifetime project for me and my mom and we achieved that," she said.

For the normally dominant Russians, these Games have brought a record drought. Russian figure skaters have won at least one gold medal at each of the Winter Games since 1964. In Vancouver, Russian athletes took silver in the men's singles event and bronze in ice dancing.

It was also the first time since 1964 that there was no American woman on the podium. Fourth-place American Mirai Nagasu, 16, said she's now got her eyes set on the next Olympics, when she'll have the maturity and experience that some of her older rivals skate with. "Hopefully by (the next Olympics) I'll have that," she said.

About her Olympic experience, she said "I guess it was as stressful as they say."
