Hull KR coach Justin Morgan said his side were worthy winners of the 214th Humberside derby despite Hull losing influential scrum-half Sean Long with a dislocated shoulder midway through the second half.

Two tries from Shaun Briscoe, a former Hull player, and another from Kris Welham helped the Robins close the gap on their arch rivals and eighth spot to a single point after a thrilling encounter.

Morgan praised his side for a solid all-round display, admitting all of his players did what was asked of them.

“We were the better side and we thoroughly deserved the win,” said Morgan. “Everybody did their job. It was a derby and we played with great passion and spirit.

“Arguably, that was the best we have played this season. We won the battle for field position and their two tries came from our errors. I’m very proud of my players.”

Hull had led 10-4 early in the second half after tries from centres Kirk Yeaman and Martin Gleeson and a goal from Danny Tickle, but never recovered from the loss of Long.

“Sean controlled the game well in the first half,” said Richard Agar, the Hull coach. “He’s in a bad way with a dislocated shoulder and he’s on his way to hospital. He’s in a lot of pain and it’s a tough one for him. He’s had a tough time with injuries this year. We were well in control. We were happy with the way we played and we nullified their kicking game.”

Another turning point arrived seconds after Long had left the field and Hull were still reorganising their defensive line. Gleeson looked to have collected Blake Green’s kick through but dropped the ball and Briscoe was waiting to pounce. Michael Dobson added the goal and also improved Briscoe’ second try before settling nerves with a drop goal.

Tempers boiled over as Hull’s Sione Lauaki and Scott Wheeldon squared up to each other sparking a brawl. Rovers were awarded the penalty for Lauaki’s high shot to end his side’s chances of winning.
