Angels add Isringhausen to roster

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Jason Isringhausen has made the Los Angeles Angels’ roster and is set for his 16th major league season.

The Angels selected the contract of the 39-year-old former Mets reliever from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday and optioned outfielder Mike Trout to the minor league team.

Isringhausen gets a $650,000, one-year contract and the chance to earn $200,000 in performance bonuses: $50,000 each for 25, 35, 45 and 55 games.

“Right now there’s no doubt that there’s a role for him in the major leagues and with our staff,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “He’s an important addition to our bullpen.”

Isringhausen was 3-3 with a 4.05 ERA and seven saves in 53 games with the Mets last year. He signed with the Angels, hoping to play for a contender.

Isringhausen said he would have retired had the Angels not signed him.

“We’re going to slot him to wherever he can get,” Scioscia said. “We’re all projecting that he can get a lot closer to how he threw the ball last year than where he was” early in camp.

Isringhausen retired the side in order in one inning Thursday against Kansas City. He has a 6.35 ERA in 5 2-3 spring training innings.

Trout’s spring training was set back because of flu that caused him to drop nearly 15 pounds.

He made the jump from Double-A Arkansas last season to the Angels and hit .220 in 40 games.

Mobile tech big to lead PayPal

EBay Inc. named mobile technology entrepreneur David Marcus president of its PayPal unit yesterday, replacing Scott Thompson, who left in January to become chief executive of Yahoo!

The appointment shows the importance of PayPal’s push into mobile payments globally and its efforts to process transactions in physical stores, not just online.

Marcus, a native of France, who turns 39 on April 12, said he plans to stick to the strategy Thompson and other top PayPal executives set in recent years.

PayPal’s top priorities are developing “products and consumer experiences” that change the way people pay around the world, Marcus said.

John Donahoe, eBay’s chief executive, said PayPal is at an important “inflexion point” because it is moving into offline payments.

PayPal is eBay’s most valuable business, so analysts and investors had been watching closely to see who would replace Thompson.

EBay shares slipped 0.7 percent to $36.99 in trading on Nasdaq.

Steadier home prices in January

Home prices in 20 cities dropped at a slower pace in January, pointing to stabilization in the real estate market.

The S&P/Case-Shiller index of property values in 20 cities fell 3.8 percent from a year earlier, after decreasing 4.1 percent in December.

Prices were little changed in January from the prior month.

Property values are steadying as a strengthening labor market underpins housing demand, which may allow the industry that precipitated the recession to contribute to growth this year. Nonetheless, the recovery in sales may be restrained by foreclosures that are putting more properties onto the market.

“We are starting to see a slightly less-negative picture,” said Sean Incremona, a senior economist at 4Cast in New York, who correctly projected the decline.

Sixteen of the 20 cities in the index showed a year-over-year decline, led by a 15 percent drop in Atlanta.

Eight cities made new post-slump lows, the report said, including Chicago, Las Vegas and New York.

Behind Dodgers Deal: TV Riches

The record-setting $2.15 billion sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers to a group led by former basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson and financier Mark Walter dropped the jaws of even the most bullish sports-industry veterans.

In an industry where the usual multiple is about three times annual revenue, the team sold for about 7.3 times its high-water mark of $293 million in revenue, set in 2008.

But with its lucrative media rights coming free from contract after the 2013 season, the new owners have a rich opportunity to either launch a regional sports network in the country's second largest market or to hold an auction for the rights to telecast Dodgers games in a golden era for sports deals.

New owners are willing to spend $2.15 billion on the Dodgers. So just how the heck are they going to make this expensive purchase a profitable enterprise? Matt Futterman discusses on The News Hub.

"If you realize it's not a baseball deal first but rather a television and entertainment deal that also comes with a real-estate opportunity, then you can begin to scratch your way back toward justifying the price," said David Carter, director of the Sports Business Institute at the University of Southern California.

In an interview Wednesday, the Dodgers' new owners said that they expect to close their deal with the current owner Frank McCourt by May 1 and that the intense interest in the team justified the price.

The greater Los Angeles television market is just under five million homes, but its outlying areas boost that figure to more than seven million. One of baseball's oldest franchises, the Dodgers have won six World Series, including one in Brooklyn, their original home, where they remain legendary.

"The Dodgers are one of the world's most storied franchises, and the opportunity to be the custodian and help build it in my view was a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Mr. Walter, chief executive of Guggenheim Partners, a fund that is making a significant investment in the team.

Mr. Johnson said he would work to enhance the "community ties and involvement. I will have an office there and will be there every day." Another investor, veteran sports executive Stan Kasten, will oversee the team's baseball operations.

Buying and Selling the Dodgers

Among the Dodgers' former owners: Brooklyn attorney Walter O'Malley—at center here in the 1950s with Dodgers manager Walt Alston, left, and shortstop Pee Wee Reese.

But the most important task will fall to the person the team selects to oversee its media venture, which is where the investors' greatest opportunity to make money lies.

During the next six to 12 months the Dodgers' owners will select one of two lucrative alternatives to pursue at a time when marquee live-sports events have become increasingly valuable.

The simplest move would be to sell their local TV rights to an existing regional sports network. The Dodgers would be entering the market at the perfect time. News Corp.'s Fox unit is trying to stave off a challenge from the new regional sports network that Time Warner Cable plans to launch next year. Dodgers telecasts form the backbone of Fox's Prime Ticket, which would lose substantial value without the team's games. Fox declined to comment. News Corp. also owns The Wall Street Journal.

Recent rights deals for the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers are valued at nearly $150 million a year, including equity in the sports networks. As the top baseball brand in such a large market, the Dodgers would likely command more than that, Lee Berke, a sports media consultant, said.

The other alternative would be for the Dodgers to launch their own network as the New York Yankees did with YES and the New York Mets did with SNY. These networks have become cash cows for team owners because of the monthly fees cable operators pay on behalf of all of their basic subscribers.

Analysts say a Dodgers network could command a monthly fee of about $3.50 per home beginning in 2014 and reach a market that could stretch as far east as Las Vegas and north to San Luis Obispo.

That could translate into nearly $300 million in revenue annually before the network sells a single ad spot. Another bonus: Proceeds from regional sports networks aren't subject to baseball's revenue-sharing rules, which seek to maintain competitive balance among the MLB's 30 teams.

Cable operators would have to agree to carry the channel, whose high price might require them to raise rates for customers. In some markets, such price rises have resulted in ugly fights between station owners and service providers. Some of these networks have failed because cable operators refused to carry them and consumers didn't demand them.

To mitigate the risk, some teams have provided equity in the networks to the major cable operators. The Mets own about 65% of SNY, and cable distributors Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable own the rest.

Mr. Johnson said he would work to enhance the 'community ties and involvement. I will have an office there and will be there every day.'

Of course, there is a chance the investors have overpaid. Even if the network gets off the ground, a sports team needs to perform well on the field to sell tickets and attract viewers and corporate sponsors. Losing bids were at least 25% less than the winning offer, suggesting that the competitors took a less bullish view on the team's financial potential than the Johnson-Walter group did.

The Dodgers have a payroll of just over $100 million, which will likely have to rise if the team is to return to excellence. The Dodgers had a win-loss record of 82-79 last year and finished third in the National League's West division.

Opened in 1962, Dodger Stadium is the third oldest in the Major Leagues, and it will require an estimated $200 million renovation if the Dodgers want to offer the luxury seating and other amenities that have become customary at ballparks.

With an average ticket price of $30.59, the seventh highest in the major Leagues in 2011, it may not be an option for the new owners to raise prices quickly. Attendance last year fell 18% from a year earlier to 2.9 million.

Mystery Deepens Over Briton in China

As facts trickle in surrounding the death of Neil Heywood, a British man whose death in China sparked a scandal, the WSJ's Deborah Kan speaks to Beijing reporter Jeremy Page about who exactly the businessman who died in Chongqing was.

BEIJING—The British businessman whose death has emerged as a key element in China's biggest political scandal in two decades periodically consulted for a British strategic-intelligence firm founded by ex-spies, a spokesman said Monday.

Neil Heywood, who was found dead in a Chongqing hotel room in November, wasn't a full-time employee of the firm, Hakluyt & Co., and wasn't involved in projects in Chongqing, the spokesman said. The work was apparently one of several jobs Mr. Heywood held. The level of sensitivity of his projects wasn't clear.

The revelation adds a layer of intrigue to the scandal, which increasingly appears to mix the worlds of international diplomacy and corporate sleuthing with China's shadowy domestic security apparatus and opaque politics.

Mr. Heywood's death is one of the events in the drama surrounding the fall of the Communist Party chief in Chongqing, Bo Xilai, whose dismissal this month has thrown Chinese politics into turmoil.

Full Coverage: Bo Xilai

Suspicions about Mr. Heywood's death were raised by Wang Lijun, the former Chongqing police chief who triggered the political drama, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. Mr. Wang, who sought refuge from Mr. Bo in the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu on Feb. 6, claimed to have fallen out with Mr. Bo after discussing with him his belief that Mr. Heywood was poisoned, according to people familiar with the matter. He also claimed Mr. Heywood had been involved in a business dispute involving Mr. Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, according to one of those people.

The British government said Sunday it had asked China's central government to investigate the case fully in light of fresh suspicions about Mr. Heywood's death, and that Chinese officials promised to "take it forward."

The new revelation about Mr. Heywood's work with Hakluyt suggests he might have been engaged in activities that are considered highly sensitive—and sometimes dangerous—in China.

Gathering business intelligence and investigating Chinese firms is a growing industry here, and inevitably those engaged in it often delve into issues of corruption, nepotism and vested bureaucratic interests.

News on Mr. Heywood and his connections to the Bo family has been eagerly devoured by a Chinese public that knows little about the personal lives of its top leaders. At the same time, there has been spreading disquiet as details in the Bo case add to the sense of a drama spinning beyond control. The nervousness is heightened by absence of news on the whereabouts of Mr. Bo and his family.

The addition of a foreigner—a well-mannered Englishman with a politically connected Chinese wife—to the Bo story has added spice to the rumor mill.

A company that used the services of a British businessman, whose death is a key element of a political scandal in China, operated in the secretive industry of business-intelligence. WSJ's Cassell Bryan-Low delves into the world of spies. Photo: Reuters

On Monday, a spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry and local Chongqing officials said they were unaware of the situation regarding Mr. Heywood. The lack of a clear, consistent line from official media and spokespeople in China usually indicates lower-level officials are waiting for the party leadership to make a collective decision about how to handle a given situation, according to political analysts.

A spokesman for Hakluyt said Mr. Heywood had been providing the company with services on a case-by-case basis for some time, without specifying exactly how long. Hakluyt was founded by former officers with the British intelligence service MI6.

A new twist emerges in the Bo Xilai drama as suspicions grow about the death last year of a British businessman in the city of Chongqing. The WSJ's Deborah Kan speaks to Beijing Bureau Chief Andy Browne.

"Neil had a long history of advising Western companies on China and we were among those who sought his advice," the spokesman said. "We're greatly saddened by his death." He declined to say what services Mr. Heywood provided. The firm offers business intelligence and advice as well as credit checks and other due-diligence services.

Several acquaintances and former colleagues of Mr. Heywood said they weren't aware of what exactly he had been doing in Chongqing in November. But people familiar with the case said his Chinese wife wasn't in Chongqing at the time, according to people familiar with the case.

People who knew Mr. Heywood described him as a well-spoken man in his late 40s or early 50s, often clad in a cream linen jacket and tie, who had lived in China for many years and was known in the business community as a part-time dealer of Aston Martin sports cars.

Timeline: The Chongqing Drama

View Interactive

The mysterious death of Neil Heywood in Chongqing last year is emerging as a key element in the drama surrounding Bo Xilai, who was sacked as Chongqing's Communist Party chief this month.

They say that Mr. Heywood, a Mandarin speaker, also was known as a freelance consultant who could help to arrange meetings and solve business problems thanks in large part to a connection with the Bo family established through his wife, who was from the northeastern city of Dalian, where Mr. Bo was mayor from 1993 to 2001.

Two people who knew Mr. Heywood said they thought he had played a role in helping to look after Mr. Bo's son, Bo Guagua, when he was studying at two British private boarding schools—Papplewick and Harrow—and at Oxford University. Two others described him as a "low-level fixer" for the Bo family, suggesting he acted as a middleman for them, helping to arrange meetings with business figures and to advise them on dealing with foreigners.

Many analysts and people close to the party elite believe there is a split in the top leadership between those who support Mr. Bo and want him to remain on the party's Politburo—its top 25 leaders—and those who want him to be ejected and face official punishment.

According to diplomats and other people familiar with the matter, Mr. Wang, the former police chief, asked for political asylum in the U.S. consulate in Chengdu and presented what he said was documentary evidence involving Mr. Bo. He was rejected because U.S. officials feared accepting him would severely damage relations with China. He was persuaded to hand himself over to Chinese central-government officials who took him to Beijing.

It is impossible to substantiate Mr. Wang's allegations or to ascertain the reasons he decided to come forward, and people familiar with the matter said he may be acting in self-interest. Nonetheless, his claims could now be used by Mr. Bo's opponents against him and other leaders who support him.

Efforts to reach Mr. Bo, his wife, Mr. Wang and Mr. Heywood's family were unsuccessful.

In this Oct. 21, 2008, photo, then-Chongqing city police chief Wang Lijun held a press conference. Wang triggered the political drama by seeking refuge from Mr. Bo in a U.S. consulate in Chengdu.

Mr. Wang's case is raising interest in Congress, as leading lawmakers are seeking to find out if the Obama administration denied him political asylum.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R., Fla.) is requesting access to State Department communications concerning Mr. Wang's case. A spokesman for Mrs. Ros-Lehtinen said she has yet to receive a response.

The State Department said last month Mr. Wang left the Chengdu consulate under his "own volition." Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland Monday declined to comment further.

One key question in the evolving drama is what exactly Mr. Heywood was doing in Chongqing when he died, and what, if any, projects he had been working on there in the recent past. But several friends, acquaintances and former colleagues said they didn't know.

After he was found dead in his Chongqing hotel room in November, local authorities swiftly declared that he died of "excessive alcohol consumption," and cremated the body without an autopsy, according to people familiar with the matter. Friends have since raised suspicions with the British Embassy, pointing out that he didn't drink.

The website for HL Consulting, a Chinese consultancy that also specializes in credit and other due-diligence checks on Chinese companies, said Mr. Heywood had worked as a nonexecutive director for the firm's IPO advisory team.

The website described Mr. Heywood as a graduate of Beijing Language and Culture University, a "famous expert" on China's economy, a long-term specialist on large Western pension funds, who had played a role in several business ventures with foreign companies, including Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.'s takeover of Volvo. Volvo didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

One person recalled Mr. Heywood introducing himself at a social event at the British Embassy in Beijing two years ago as an adviser to the city's Aston Martin dealership.

"He was clearly from a good family, in his late 40s or 50s, and was typical British, yet quite old school," the person said.

Reds’ Madson done for year

Reds closer Ryan Madson has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and will miss the season.

Madson returned to Cincinnati and was examined by team medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek. The Reds said yesterday Kremchek told general manager Walt Jocketty the ligament was torn from the bone of Madson’s right elbow.

Madson agreed in January to a one-year contract guaranteeing $8.5 million, after a $44 million, four-year deal to stay with Philadelphia collapsed in November.

BRAVES: Third baseman Chipper Jones will miss the start of his farewell season.

Two days after Jones announced this will be his final year, Braves general manager Frank Wren said Jones will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair torn meniscus in his left knee.

The procedure is scheduled to be performed tomorrow. The 39-year-old Jones will open the season on the disabled list, but the team expects him to miss just the first six games.

Wren said Jones should return in time for the April 13 home opener.

TIGERS: While Miguel Cabrera said he is ready to rejoin lineup, Detroit wants to wait for doctors to give their OK.

The third baseman broke a bone below his right eye Monday when struck by a bad-hop grounder.

Cabrera will be re-evaluated on Tuesday. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he is confident Cabrera will be ready for Opening Day but also said a stint on the disabled list remained a possibility.

RAYS: Pitcher Matt Bush is being held on more than $1 million bail on charges he left the scene of an accident that seriously injured a motorcyclist.

Rangers took playoff clinching in stride

Not only didn’t the Rangers celebrate qualifying for the playoffs following their three-ring, 4-2 victory over the Devils at Madison Square Garden on Monday that signaled their earliest clinching since 1991-92, the Blueshirts barely acknowledged the achievement even to one another.

“I don’t really remember anyone bringing it up,” Ryan Callahan said before scoring the winner at 2:42 of overtime in Wednesday night’s 2-1 home victory over the Red Wings. “We knew we were in, but I guess with the way we’ve played this year, being in first place for the last while, we look at it as just the first step, though at the same time it’s nothing anyone takes for granted.”

Callahan has been a Ranger since late in 2006-07. Monday’s clinching in Game 72 represents the first time in his Broadway tenure that the Rangers haven’t gone to at least Game 80 in order to clinch a spot. The Rangers qualified in Game 75 in 2005-06, the first season after the lockout.

Two years ago, the Rangers were eliminated on the final day with their shootout defeat in Philadelphia. Last year, the Rangers qualified watching Carolina lose to Tampa Bay on television hours after their own victory over the Devils.

“It’s definitely a better scenario than we’re used to going through,” Callahan said. “Making the playoffs was our first goal going into the year, but your goals change as a season progresses, and as well as we’ve played, our goals have become winning the conference and the division.

“We also want to become a team like Detroit, where making the playoffs is treated as no big deal and as just the first step to something much bigger.”

The Red Wings and Sharks are the only two teams in the NHL that qualified for the playoffs in each of the six seasons following the lockout. Though Detroit is just a few points away from clinching its 21st straight postseason berth, the league’s longest such current streak, San Jose is on the bubble.

The Rangers, Devils, Flyers, Penguins, Canucks, Predators, Ducks Canadiens each qualified five of the first six post-lockout seasons. New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Vancouver and Nashville are on the verge of joining the Rangers as six-time party-goers.

“There’s no way I’m going to say with the way the league is that you expect to be in,” coach John Tortorella said. “That’s the goal, and I’m happy we’re in, but I don’t want that to be focus because we have a lot to do.

“I’m thrilled with the way the team has played, overachieved and answered questions that we didn’t even know we’d have, but the most important thing for us is to just go about our business and continue to improve and refine our game as we get to the playoffs.”

Dan Girardi was selected by the New York chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association as the Rangers’ nominee for the Masterton Trophy, The trophy, named for former North Star Bill Masterton, is awarded to the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication” to hockey.

“It obviously means a lot,” said the 27-year-old Girardi, who was signed by the Rangers as a free agent after going undrafted and has emerged as a first-pair defenseman who this season was named to play in the All Star Game. “I looked up the award after I learned I was nominated for it and I feel like I fit the profile.

“I feel it’s a good description of how I project myself as a hockey player and a person.”

***

Marc Staal earned the Broadway Hat for a stalwart performance in 22:07 including a sliding play that denied a centering pass defending against a two-on-one with six minutes remaining in regulation.

Michael Del Zotto, who had the primary assist on Callahan’s winner after taking a relay from Brandon Dubinsky, has assisted on four of the Rangers’ eight OT goals.

The Tim Erixon-Stu Bickel pair had 13 shifts including two early in the third period, the last ending with 13:35 to go in regulation, the Rangers cutting down to four defensemen thereafter.

John Mitchell had one shift in the third period while Mike Rupp had two and Brandon Prust had three.

***

The Rangers ended a five-game (0-4-1) and 9¹/-year losing streak against Red Wings, the victory their first in the series since Oct. 25, 2003 when Mike Dunham beat Dominik Hasek at the Garden.

Rangers conclude a seven-game homestand on which they have gone 4-2 Friday night against Sabres before a three-game road trip to Toronto, Minnesota and Winnipeg that begins against the Maple Leafs on Saturday.

Confident Manhattan Center relying on talented sophomores

Jesus Medina has already been clocked in the high 80s with his fastball and led Manhattan Center last year with a .410 batting average, 20 runs scored and 13 RBIs. He has several Division I schools looking at him, from Sacred Heart to Wake Forest.

Yet, the senior right-hander/shortstop isn’t the Rams’ most important player, according to coach Edgar Leon. In fact, there is no one player the longtime coach is leaning toward. There are three – sophomore Jerry Liang, Alex Sanchez and Michael Pena – who will break or break their season.

“That’s the key,” Leon said. “Our season will roll with our sophomores.”

Denis Gostev

Manhattan Center's Jerry Liang is one of three sophomores the Rams are counting on for big years.

Medina is clearly Manhattan Center’s top talent, Leon said, a quiet leader with an advanced skill set and determination to match. But the underclassmen are vital, vital because Liang will follow Medina in the rotation, all three will hit in the middle of the order and play important positions in the field, Sanchez behind the plate and Pena at second base.

Leon is high on Liang, who will be at shortstop when Medina is on the mound and in center field or on the hill himself otherwise. As a freshman, he went 2-0 pitching with a 3.48 ERA and scored eight runs.

“He’s playing phenomenal right now,” Leon said. “You wouldn’t know he’s a sophomore; he’s playing like a senior. He might become the best player I’ve ever coached.”

Medina and Liang will get the ball in the season’s biggest moments and have help with hard-throwing senior Dabian Canales and Gregorio Luperon transfer Jesus Garcia. All four can throw in the mid-80s and have solid off-speed stuff to rely on.

“Every game we’re gonna be in,” Leon said. “These four kids can get on a roll. We just have to play good defense.”

Leon is cautiously optimistic because of youth, but sees potential for a memorable May based on the preseason and how his young kids performed as freshmen. Pena and Sanchez both hit over .300 and all three have made strides offensively thus far.

“If Jerry and the other sophomores come through, we’ll have a better year than last year,” Leon said. “If they keep hitting, it will be a fantastic year.”

Manhattan Center is coming off a solid season, a second-place finish in Manhattan A East behind defending champion George Washington. The year, however, had a familiar ending: a first-round playoff loss to Lane.

Manhattan Center hasn’t gotten out of the opening round in Leon’s 11 years, losing first round contests each of the last three seasons. Leon thinks this could be the year the Rams avenge their playoff demons.

“This is the most talented team I’ve ever had,” he said. “This team is limitless. We want to win a few playoff games and see what happens. It could be a very exciting year.”

Ross leaves Giants for Jaguars

The Giants did not pursue cornerback Aaron Ross in free agency and his departure yesterday came as no surprise. Ross signed a three-year contract with the Jaguars that can be worth $15.3 million and now the Giants must hope Terrell Thomas’ knee and Prince Amukamara’s foot are healing and ready for heavy-duty workloads.

The decision not to make a play for Ross is based on the Giants’ belief Thomas can regain his form and once again be a starting cornerback. Thomas is on schedule coming back from surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament and, prior to free agency, was re-signed to a four-year contract that can be worth up to $28.4 million. More telling, the deal protects the Giants if Thomas cannot make a successful comeback, as it is really a one-year deal worth $2 million with a team option for the remainder of the contract.

UPDATES FROM OUR GIANTS BLOG

GIANTS SUPER BOWL SPECIAL

Last season the Giants were ravaged at cornerback, with five landing on season-ending injured reserve. Four of the cornerbacks — Thomas, Bruce Johnson, Michael Coe and Justin Tryon — were re-signed. The Giants are also counting heavily on Amukamara, their first-round pick in 2011, who missed the first seven games with a broken foot and, when he returned, endured significant growing pains.

This offseason Amukamara underwent Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy, an injection procedure to aid the healing process in his left foot. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw underwent the same procedure on his right foot.

Ross, 29, started at cornerback for the Giants’ two most recent Super Bowl victories and is the first of those two-time champions to leave. The Giants did not make a big play to keep the 2007 first-round pick.

He is the second key member of the Super Bowl XLVI championship team to exit, following receiver Mario Manningham, who signed a two-year deal with the 49ers. As with Ross, the Giants fully expected Manningham to leave.

Core four has talented Molloy eyeing CHSAA state title repeat

Fresh off its first-ever CHSAA state softball title, Archbishop Molloy has already heard the rumblings of what’s expected this season.

“We feel like everyone thinks we’re the team to beat,” senior Dana Moss said. “We are confident, but we are not cocky.”

There are plenty of reasons to believe that to be the case.

Molloy, which has won three straight CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens crowns, returns its pair of dominant aces in C.W. Post-bound power thrower Maria Palmeri and Victoria Goldbach, known for her ability to change speeds. Both are completey healthy to start the season. Goldbach battled a shoulder injury the beginning of last year and Palmeri, an All-City first team selection by The Post, hurt her knee over the summer.

Robert Cole

Co-ace Victoria Goldach returns to the circle for Molloy.

Robert Cole

Arcbishop Molloy's Maria Palmeri is one of the city's best all-around players.

“They are two of the best pitchers in the city without a doubt,” Stanners coach Maureen Rosenbaum said.

Palmeri, who will be at short with Goldbach in the circle, is part of a deadly middle of the order along with Moss, who is also headed to C.W. Post, and her sophomore sister Taylor. The three combined to go 12-for-20 with seven runs scored and 10 RBs in two state playoff games and went 9-for-12 with five runs scored and five RBIs in a city title game win over Moore Catholic. Both Mosses and Goldbach earned All-City second team honors.

"It’s special our core,” Dana Moss said. It’s not just the middle of the lineup that can hit. It’s the whole line up.”

Dana Moss will split time at first and short and Taylor Moss, a sophomore, will do the same at first and right field. The Stanners' best team has been with Goldbach in the circle and Palmeri gobbling balls up in the infield.

There are still holes to fill. Kristen Ponticelli will be back in one of the corner outfield spots and batting second, but will have a new partner atop the order and in center field. Junior Theresa Conway is expected to take over in centerfield and the leadoff spot for the graduated Jen DeMaria.

“Theresa’s a speed demon,” Dana Moss. “We needed a table setter and she definitely filled that spot.”

Julianne Tracy will add speed and play second base. All of the players raved about catcher Maddie Casello, who slides in for Gabby Basile and her strong arm. Catherine Hickey will see time in left and Fallon McCarthy can added a power bat at third.

“I see a lot of potential in her,” Palmeri said of Casello.

The Stanners see the same in themselves. Rosenbaum said she hasn’t felt the difference of being the defending state champions, but believes that might change when games begin in a new five-team Brooklyn/Queens league that includes rivals St. Francis Prep and Mary Louis. Her players believe their experience in big games will help them deal with any pressure they feel.

It’s not like they haven’t done any of this before.

“Winning lets you know what it feels like to be at the top,” Goldbach said. “So we definitely want to get back there again.”

QB Quinn to visit Jets

The Jets will continue their quest to find a new backup for quarterback Mark Sanchez with a visit from free agent Brady Quinn on Friday, according to a source.

Quinn was a first-round pick of the Browns in 2007 out of Notre Dame. He spent the last two years with the Broncos. The Jets are also considering Lions free agent Drew Stanton, whose visit began last night and will continue today.

The Jets also are trying to find a new starting safety. Reggie Nelson, who spent the last two seasons with the Bengals, will visit today, according to a source.

The Jets had interest in safety Brandon Meriweather and had him scheduled to visit yesterday, but he signed with the Redskins.

The Jets also have Raiders free agent wide receiver Chaz Schilens visiting last night and today.

PSAL boys basketball rankings

To the surprise of nobody, it will be an all-Brooklyn affair at Madison Square Garden Saturday at noon. Boys & Girls and Thomas Jefferson booked their tickets to the Garden last Saturday in the PSAL Class AA semifinals with impressive wins, Boys High taking down rival Lincoln and Jefferson rallying past dogged Wings Academy.

For all the details, read below:

1. Thomas Jefferson (25-6) (Last week: 1)

You couldn’t have scripted a better ending Saturday night for Jefferson and star senior Thaddeus Hall. He scored five points – on a traditional three-point play and dunk – in the final 7.7 seconds of the Orange Wave’s 72-68 win over Wings Academy. Hall and Jefferson move on to the Garden needing a win over rival Boys High to net its first city title since 1954. If Saturday’s theatrics are any indication, it should be a wild day at MSG.

Denis Gostev

Thomas Jefferson and Thaddeus Hall remain atop The Post's PSAL boys basketball rankings.

Next: No. 2 Boys & Girls, PSAL Class AA finals (March 17, 12 p.m. @ Madison Square Garden)

2. Boys & Girls (23-6) (2)

Wesley Myers is the best guard in the city nobody talks about. That was evident again on Saturday as the junior poured in 21 points and added five assists as Boys High beat rival Lincoln for the third time in four tries. The Kangaroos return to the Garden for the fifth time in six years, looking for their third straight city crown.

Next: No. 1 Lincoln, PSAL Class AA finals (March 17, 12 p.m. @ Madison Square Garden)

3. Wings Academy (25-3) (4)

You have to feel for Wings. For the third straight season, a memorable year ends in heartbreak, in the PSAL Class AA semifinals at St. John’s University. This was the toughest one to swallow as Wings led Jefferson by four points with under a minute left in regulation, but 12 missed free throws and a few questionable calls were the Bronx school’s undoing.

Next: Season complete

4. Lincoln (19-10) (3)

Sure, Isaiah Whitehead was hardly on the court in the first half. And, yes, Lincoln was without Tafari Whittingham, who was serving the final game of a three-game suspension. Still, Boys High thoroughly outplayed the Railsplitters in Saturday’s PSAL Class AA semifinals. Lincoln, in fact, never quite seemed right this year, never dominating like many imagined it would.

Next: Season complete

5. South Shore (19-9) (4)

South Shore will remain formidable next year as Terrence Samuel and Shamiek Sheppard will be seniors and Doudmy Saint Hilare a junior. The frontcourt is the question mark as the Vikings lose forwards Wayne Martin, Theo Brown, Jean Toussaint and Kwanique Martin. Once a strength, size could be a weakness next winter for the burgeoning Canarsie power.

Next: Season complete

6. Curtis (24-6) (10)

Curtis has proved it’s not just a good Staten Island team, but a factor in the city as well by nearly upsetting Brooklyn dynamo Lincoln in the PSAL Class AA quarterfinals. The Warriors graduate seniors Dontay Jackson, DaShawn Richmond, Debonair Edwards and Kevin McIntosh, but the cupboard is hardly bare. Junior forward Hassan Martin is as good as any prospect in the city, fellow junior Jermaine Anthony-Huff is a scoring machine and sophomore Jamel Olorunojoe figures to be a key complimentary piece.

Next: Season complete

7. Cardozo (24-7) (7)

The Judges earliest playoff exit in three years should not take away from what was a successful season. Despite losing national junior prospect Jermaine Lawrence, Cardozo shared the Queens AA crown with Bayside and won its third straight Queens borough title. With guards Omar Williams, Kyle Credle and Kendall Brown all back, the future is bright.

Next: Season complete

8. Wadleigh (22-6) (8)

If it wasn’t clear before, it is now: Basil Harley is one of the city’s top guards. He poured in 64 points in two playoff contests in the past week as Wadleigh reached the quarterfinals for the third straight year, only to fall short to top-ranked Jefferson, 80-61. That was no fault of the 5-foot-6 Harley’s as he poured in 25 points, just five days after torching Bayside for 39. Some Division III school is going to be very fortunate to grab this speedy and skilled senior.

Next: Season compete

9. John F. Kennedy (19-10) (9)

By Kennedy standards, the last three years have not been successful. The Knights did knock off rival Wings Academy for a Bronx Borough title, but they have yet to reach the quarterfinals since getting to the Garden in 2009. That’s atypical for legendary coach Johnny Mathis and company.

Next: Season complete

10. Bayside (20-6) (10)

Under coach Corey Semper, Bayside has taken positive strides the last two years, sharing the Queens AA crown with Cardozo. Still, at some point, the Commodores need that to transfer into playoff success – they have yet to reach the final eight under Semper, falling in the second round to Wadleigh this year.

Asian Markets Gain

SINGAPORE—Asian stock markets rose Tuesday as greater certainty that Greece will receive its second bailout rekindled risk appetite, though Tokyo gave back most of its early gains after the Bank of Japan failed to make further major moves to ease monetary policy.

Comments from European officials Monday reassured the market that Greece would soon get approval for its second bailout.

In the Markets

Dow Posts Fourth Straight Gain

Japan's Nikkei Stock Average finished 0.1% higher at 9899.08, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.2%to 4247.6 and South Korea's Kospi Composite gained 1.1% to 2025.04.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was up 1.1% and China's Shanghai Composite was up 0.8% in late trading. India's Sensex was 1.2% higher.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 59 points in electronic trading.

Real-estate shares gained in Tokyo on expectations that Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa would take a pro-easing stance in a policy statement due later in the day. The central bank earlier announced it would keep interest rates steady and not increase its asset-buying program, but would boost a loan program for businesses in 18 sectors seen as having high growth potential.

"(Shirakawa) suggesting a continuous easing stance would likely stoke expectations for a weaker yen, and lead to further gains in stocks," said Fumiyuki Nakanishi, general manager of investment & research at SMBC Friend Securities.

Mitsui Fudosan advanced 2.5% and Sumitomo Realty & Development gained 0.8%, both down from their highs for the day.

Asahi Kasei fell 5.4% amid concerns over a financial burden after announcing it agreed to buy U.S. medical equipment maker Zoll Medical for around $2.21 billion.

In Sydney, health-care and consumer staples led the market's advance; Sonic Healthcare advanced 1.7%, while Woolworths rose 1.2%.

Car makers and auto parts makers led gains in Seoul in anticipation of the free trade agreement between South Korea and the U.S. set to take effect Thursday; Hyundai Motor jumped 3.7%, and Hyundai Mobis rose 5.6%.

Mainland property developers rose in Hong Kong after the state-run China Securities Journal Tuesday cited a government document as saying that China will keep its policy regarding mortgages to first-time home buyers stable this year and ensure that loans to these buyers are sufficient.

China Overseas Land was up 2.7% and China Resources Land was 0.4% higher.

In foreign-exchange markets, the euro edged higher against the U.S. dollar on renewed confidence in Europe's ability to tackle its debt crisis after the head of the euro-zone finance ministers, Jean-Claude Juncker, said Monday there is "no doubt" Greece's second bailout will be approved later in the week.

Still, many investors remained cautious ahead of the much-awaited Federal Open Market Committee meeting later in the global day, amid differing views on what stance the Fed might take in light of recent U.S. economic data.

"The Fed might not implement QE3 as economic data has been better than expected," said Rieve Ko, an analyst at SIAS Research in Singapore. "(Risk) sentiment could take a hit if the Fed is being hawkish."

The euro was at $1.3167, from $1.3155 late Monday in New York, and at ¥108.19, from ¥108.20. The dollar was at ¥82.17, from ¥82.23.

Spot gold was at $1,702.30 per troy ounce, up $1.50 from its New York settlement on Monday. April Nymex crude oil futures were 58 cents higher at $106.92 per barrel on Globex.

MF Global execs reportedly set for big bonuses

Three top executives at failed brokerage firm MF Global Holdings could be in line for bonuses of up to several hundred thousand dollars each under a plan by a trustee overseeing bankruptcy proceedings, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal Friday.

Louis Freeh, the former FBI director now in charge of unwinding what is left of the New York company, is expected to ask a bankruptcy-court judge as soon as this month to approve performance-related payouts for the chief operating officer, finance chief and general counsel at MF Global, sources said.

All three executives kept their jobs after the company's Oct. 31 collapse in order to help Freeh unwind the firm's assets and maximize payouts to creditors, the WSJ added.

Under the plan, the three executives and as many as 20 other MF Global employees working for Freeh would get the bonuses only if they hit specified targets such as increasing the value of MF Global's estate for creditors, according to the sources.

The WSJ reported last month that investigators were scrutinizing money transfers made during the firm's final days in an effort to uncover what happened to $1.6 billion in missing customer funds.

MF Global filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 31, hurt by bad bets that its chief executive and former New Jersey governor, Jon Corzine, made on bonds belonging to troubled European countries.

For Peyton, some signs point to Miami

Miami — Internally, there has been a directive — George Steinbrenner style — from Dolphins owner Stephen Ross for his football people to get Peyton Manning.

His message: “Make it happen.’’

On Tuesday night, a source told the Miami Herald the Dolphins, who are reportedly about $15 million under the salary cap, are “very confident’’ they have the goods to make a strong run at signing the former Colts qaurterback.

After his farewell press conference in Indianapolis, Manning flew here Wednesday night and was immediately tailed by TV news helicopters and other local media. A Dolphins insider said Manning wasn’t in town to meet with the team.

SIGN OF THE TIMES: Billboard alongside I-595 in Fort Lauderdale is part of a campaign by a group called Manning to Miami. The group wants the former Colts QB to play for the Dolphins.

SIGN OF THE TIMES: Billboard alongside I-595 in Fort Lauderdale is part of a campaign by a group called Manning to Miami. The group wants the former Colts QB to play for the Dolphins.

“I haven’t thought about teams and I don’t know who is interested,’’ Manning said after his arrival. “I really don’t. This is all new to me. But look, the Miami Dolphins have a great organization, a great history there, they have new people in place. And so you have no idea what teams are interested.”

PHOTOS: PEYTON MANNING'S CAREER

UPDATES FROM OUR JETS BLOG

Among the teams rumored to be most interested in Manning — the Dolphins, Redskins, Jets, Seahawks and Cardinals — Miami makes the most sense for him on many levels. And because of this there is a heavy belief in South Florida that, like LeBron James, Manning will be taking his talents to South Beach.

Even Heat star Dwyane Wade implored the Dolphins to make it happen, sending out this not-so-subtle message on his Twitter account yesterday: “peyton that number 18 wld look gr8 in a dolphins uniform..steve ross let’s go.. marlins & heat style...All in.’’

Outside of a brief stint of good health from Chad Pennington, the Dolphins have struggled through 16 quarterbacks since the day Dan Marino unlaced his spikes for the last time in 1999.

Subsequently, the results have reflected their shortcoming at the most important position on the field, with the Dolphins having made the playoffs only once in the last 10 years — in 2008 behind Chad Pennington.

The Dolphins believe the moment Manning is under center it makes them not only a playoff team but relevant in a division that’s been dominated for the last decade by the Patriots, with the Jets adding some occasional noise.

Ross is a star-seeking owner who is star-struck by Manning and he’s desperate to become relevant for the first time in his ownership tenure.

On many levels, Miami makes the most sense for Manning.

-- Despite holes on the right side, the Dolphins have strong foundation on the offensive line with left tackle Jake Long, a former No. 1 pick, center Mike Pouncey, their 2011 first-round pick, and left guard Richie Incognito in place.

-- At receiver, they have Brandon Marshall and there is heavy speculation that Reggie Wayne, Manning’s top receiver with the Colts who is an unrestricted free agent, is prepared to follow Manning to Miami, where he played his college ball with the Hurricanes.

“Me being in his trail going to Miami? I would love it,’’ Wayne told WQAM Radio yesterday. “I am totally available. South Florida is already hot out here, baby, so you put us together, it’ll be burning up. Now you got me visualizing it. I see it.’’

-- At running back, the Dolphins have the dynamic Reggie Bush, who stayed healthy for a full 16-game season last year for the first time in his career. He gained 1,000 yards for the first time and averaged five yards per carry.

-- The Dolphins have a solid defense in place, having finished sixth in the NFL last season in fewest points allowed.

-- The Dolphins offer the kind of weather Manning wants to play in. Those close to Manning, who has played his entire career in a dome at home, say he has no interest playing with a cold-weather team.

-- Manning owns a condo in South Beach, where he spends a lot of his offseason time. In fact, while the NFL Scouting Combine was taking place in Indianapolis two weeks ago, Manning was working out in Miami with some of his Colts teammates, including Wayne.

-- The Redskins, along with the Dolphins considered the most desperate to land a star quarterback, play the Giants twice a year in the NFC East — something those close to Manning believe is a huge turnoff because he doesn’t want to compete against his baby brother, Eli.

“I think it would be tough for him to be in the NFC East and play twice a year and potentially knock Eli out of the playoffs,” former Colts coach Tony Dungy told ESPN. “I don’t think he would want to be in direct competition with Eli and the New York Giants.”

There is a lot of sentiment from people around the league supporting the Manning-to-Miami scenario.

“You do whatever you have to do to get Peyton Manning,’’ former Dolphins coach and current Fox NFL analyst Jimmy Johnson told the Miami Herald. “Age is not a concern. If Manning has the supporting cast he is still a great player. The Dolphins have a good team. A great quarterback with a good team can win it all.’’

Knicks center Chandler out with hamstring injury

SAN ANTONIO — Tyson Chandler got his championship ring in Dallas, but also picked up a left hamstring injury that could force him to miss the final two games of the Knicks’ four-game road trip.

Chandler missed Wednesday night's 118-105 loss to the Spurs — the first game he’s missed as a Knick — and he is questionable for Milwaukee Friday night. Jared Jeffries (sore knee) also didn't play against San Antonio and is out for Milwaukee, too.

Rookie Josh Harrellson, who made his return in Dallas, started in Chandler’s place. Harrellson, who couldn’t even break the rotation when he became healthy from a broken wrist one week ago, scored eight points with eight rebounds Wednesday night. He was a plus-17 vs. Dallas and was on the floor during the 15-0 fourth-quarter run.

“I’d rather be out there, but I’d rather not be out three, four weeks and play it smart and listen to what [the doctors] have to say,” Chandler said. “I’m hoping it feels better but I’m listening to the doctors at this point.’’

How badly were Chandler and Jeffries missed last night?

“They anchor our defense,’’ D’Antoni said. “That’s why we improved from last year to this year.’’

Chandler said he believes he hurt the hamstring during practice Monday. He also is battling a wrist injury and wasn’t active as usual in the Dallas loss.

“I felt it at the beginning of the game,’’ Chandler said. “It tightened up as the game went on. It’s frustrating because I know how the team needs me playing against a tall team [the Spurs]. It’s a tall task.”

Chandler wore his championship ring in the locker room in San Antonio, showing it off. He said he was overcome with emotion that everywhere he went walking in Dallas this week, fans came up to him to express their gratitude.

D’Antoni said before the Dallas game he considered Chandler as good as any center in the NBA.

“It’s very humbling, very overwhelming,’’ Chandler said of the compliment.

***

D’Antoni finally rewarded rookie Iman Shumpert (two points in 29 minutes) for his sensational play off the bench and put him in the starting lineup at shooting guard in place of Landry Fields last night (eight points). The Jeremy Lin-Fields pregame ritual handshake is over. On Monday, D’Antoni said Fields would start “for now’’, indicating a change could be in the offing. Fields had his third straight poor offensive showing in Dallas, scoring just four points. but had 10 rebounds.

“We’ve had horrible starts and horrible starts to the second half,’’ D’Antoni said. “It’s not a demotion. It’s trying to find combinations that play well together. The second group is faster, maybe for Landry to drive and run and use his athleticism it might be better for him. Shumpert’s a little stronger. It might not be a permanent thing, but we’ll see.’’

Fields didn’t sound delighted. He was on top of the world during the Knicks’ 7-0 run, forming a vibrant tandem with Lin.

“Whatever, you come off the bench and can still try to do what I do,” Fields said. “Bring energy.’’

Fields said his intangibles are his thing.

“I don’t mind not showing up a lot in the stats,’’ he said. “I do whatever I can to make the team win. Sometimes it’s not glorified, but I’m content with it.’’

CEO’s secret

Few workers have survived the recent economic turmoil without feeling overwhelmed, overworked and underpaid. But for some executives, the stress of a floundering economy has lead to an even bigger consequence: substance abuse problems.

Treatment specialists say they see the effects of the recession in the white-collar clients coming their way, who say the business pressures of recent years have led to drug and alcohol issues, or exacerbated existing ones.

“I’ve seen a lot more escapism since the economic meltdown,” says Dr. Kevin Fleming, an executive coach who specializes in treating addiction — and says he’s been counseling a growing number of Wall Streeters.

BOSS’S HELPERS: Executive rehab programs cater to the needs of white-collar substance abusers.

The volatile market has had a particularly dangerous effect on his patients, says Fleming, who calls his consultancy, Grey Matters International, a “boutique executive addiction treatment firm.”

“Especially [for] the financiers I work with, it’s very tough to get any sense control of this market,” he says. “Most them of have, in some capacity, developed a learned helplessness state. They’re withdrawing.”

Joe McKinsey, the CEO and founder of the Dunes, a ritzy rehab center that opened in East Hampton in 2010, has launched an “executive treatment program” in response to the high number of Manhattan business execs coming his way.

“There’s been a definite uptick,” says McKinsey, who likewise points to market-driven anxiety as a factor.

“With this economy, pressure at work is obviously more difficult for everyone,” he says.

And, notes Madeleine Narvilas, executive director of the Dunes, those in charge have a unique set of pressures.

“We’re seeing people that feel more heavily the responsibility of the people they employ,” she says. “These are people who run their own companies and corporations, and are feeling intensely that personal responsibility of being the CEO.”

Arnold Washton, an addiction psychologist whose New York and New Jersey practices focus on treating white-collar professionals, says he’s seen a shift in the substances his clients are turning to.

“I’ve seen perhaps fewer people using cocaine, and more people drinking heavily and using prescription narcotics like Vicodin, Percocet and Oxycontin,” says Washton. “I see a lot of executives and professionals going to multiple doctors and getting multiple prescriptions. These are not people who go out and buy drugs on the street.”

Washton notes another difference between his clients and street users: Those with high-powered careers and professional reputations to maintain are not generally inclined to drop everything and enter a detox program,
