WW2 plane wreck, PNG

photo

WW2 plane wreck, PNG

WW2 Japanese plane wreck near Madang, PNG, July 85.
I wonder how much of it is left now?
I just found this info thanks to Wikitravel:
There is a old WWII Japanese airfield (north coast from Madang) which is now pretty much completely covered by Jungle. There is a lot of old plane wreckage and bomb craters still scattered around the place, including a large reasonably well-preserved Mitsubishi 'Betty' Bomber.
And here's a bit more info from Pacific Wrecks.com:
The Japanese occupied the town and surrounding area on January 1, 1943. During the war, Lt. General Hatazo Adachi, commander of Japanese XVIII Army briefly had his HQ at Madang. Also the 20th and 41 Division of the Japanese Army were stationed in Madang.
There are some interesting WWII sites in Madang and along the North Coast Road and in Alexishafen. These bases were bypassed by American forces, and not invaded until much later when Australian 15 and 21 Brigades and 7th Division recaptured Madang on April 25, 1944, and Alexishafen on April 26, 1944. The coastal waters around this area of the north coast contain several shipwrecks and sunken planes.

Black Nab at Saltwick Bay

Black Nab at Saltwick Bay

Landscape photography by Pete Barnes from near Whitby on Yorkshire Coast

Blog Post www.petebarnesphotography.co.uk/2011/08/25/saltwick-bay-l...

Not done much in the way of landscape photos as I’ve been a bit busy with the weddings but I thought I would try and get up to Saltwick bay near Whitby and get a few seascape type photos. The east coast of the North York Moors is a great place to take photos, plenty of little bays be it sandy, rocky or stoney. As it generally faces east (north in parts) it’s ideal for sunrises and as summer rolls on, sunsets. I went up with a friend and we camped with the intention of getting a sunset in the evening and the sunrise the following morning. Didn’t get a sunset due in part to the miserable rain and part to the folk festival going on at all the pubs! But we managed to get up and get to Saltwick Bay for the mist to lift and the sun to come up.
We got the typical shot of Admiral Von Tromp’s wreck lit by the low sun and as it got a little higher we got a couple of longer exposures with the Lee Big Stopper. I’d have liked to have done the longer exposure stuff before the sun peeked over the clouds but it was a bit grey and misty and my mind wasn’t quite as focused as it should have been. The shot of Black Nab was taken at ISO100, 16mm, f/13 for 30 seconds, I would have preferred f/16 for a little longer but I didn’t have my cable release so no bulb mode (I must reorder one now).
It’s always a little disappointing when you don’t get the shot you set out for but you often come away with something you were not expecting. Getting yourself out there is the main thing, fine tuning your compositions and learning from little mistakes ultimately means when the conditions are perfect you have the skills, technical knowledge and experience to take a great shot.
If anyone is interested in my photo buddy’s shots, his flickr name is tangamansam, he’s always after contacts! Thanks for looking folks, I’m going to get back to the wedding stuff.

Sunset at The Eiffel Tower

photo

Sunset at The Eiffel Tower

TheFella Photography | Twitter | Facebook | 500px | RedBubble | Website | Getty Images | Tumblr

Our train got into Paris Gard du Nord around 17:30, then we walked to our nearby hotel, just by Gare du l'Est. It was a quick turnaround, as I wanted to be out at a Parisienne landmark by sunset. Now, I know that most of my photos are at sunset, sunrise or the blue hour, but there simply is no better times to shoot landscapes, especially colour and HDR ones. There are exceptions to the rule, obviously, but 95% of the time this rule holds true, at least in my style of photography.

We got to the Eiffel Tower ridiculously early, so went for some food while I waited for the light to change. As soon as the sun started dropping, I raced to this little park in front of the tower and started snapping away. Poor Anna had to wait patiently while I ran backwards and forwards changing position, getting different angles and adapting as the light changed. When the sun got to a certain point, I noticed how it shone through this gap in the hedge. I waited until I could frame it with this little tree as well.

We were quite lucky to get any type of decent sunset, as it had been spitting a few minutes beforehand and the sky was covered in dark storm clouds. We even saw thunderstorms later on from the top of the tower. Thankfully the clouds broke up for a while as the sun dipped beneath the horizon.

The Eiffel Tower (La Tour Eiffel) was completed in 1889 in only four years and was the entrance arch to the World's Fair that year. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel and held the title of the tallest man-made structure in the world (324 metres) for 41 years until it was surpassed by the Chrysler Building. To make it look more uniform to people on the ground, the tower is actually painted in three different shades of paint; the lightest at the top and the darkest at the bottom.

This is a 7-shot HDR. You nearly always need to take more than three exposures if you're shooting directly into the sun, as the range of light is far greater than most normal scenes.

This photo is for Carol (in a barrel), as she went to Paris a few days before me and probably didn't bother taking any sunset shots.

No images in comments please.

Thai Economy Shrinks

BANGKOK—The Thai economy contracted in the second quarter as supply disruptions in the auto industry caused by the natural disasters in Japan took a toll on Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.

The country's gross domestic product shrank 0.2% from the January-March quarter, said Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Board, the government's economic planning agency.

GDP rose 2.6% in the second quarter from a year earlier. In the first quarter, Thailand's GDP expanded 2% on-quarter and 3.2% on-year—revised up from an earlier estimate of 3%.

The agency revised down slightly its forecast for full-year economic growth to 3.5%-4% from 3.5%-4.5% previously.

The median forecast of seven economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires was for GDP to have expanded 0.4% in the second quarter from the first quarter, and 3.55% from a year earlier. They forecast the economy will expand 4.2% this year.

If positive momentum continues as expected, the economy should grow by 5% in the second half of this year, compared with a 2.9% growth in the first half, and result in a full-year growth of 4%, said Mr. Arkhom.

The earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March disrupted the supply of components, dragging on the production of vehicles, one of Thailand's key export goods. However, as many Japanese auto makers and auto parts companies resumed their operations, the situation has largely been resolved and pent-up orders will likely push production up in the second half.

Exports expanded by 19.2% in the second quarter, much slower than the 27.4% growth in the first quarter. Mr. Arkhom said exports this year should rise 16.5%, with imports climbing 21.3%. He also said the economy should grow by 5% in the second half of this year.

TMB Bank Vice President Naris Sathapholdeja said while the on-quarter GDP growth was a surprise, it shouldn't prevent the Bank of Thailand from raising its policy rate by 0.25 percentage point to 3.5% at its meeting Wednesday.

"The central bank may consider the weak GDP growth as temporary, as the auto sector's production has already returned to normalcy so they're likely to raise the rate," he said.

He said that the central bank may, however, pause its tightening cycle in the remaining two meetings this year following pressure from the new government, which is focused on economic growth.

However, given mounting worries over a global recession amid severe economic problems in advanced economies and Thailand's weaker-than-expected growth in the second quarter, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the bank stand pat on rates at the upcoming meeting.

While not making an explicit call for a neutral rate decision, Mr. Arkhom said he understood the central bank's role to anchor inflation but noted that any monetary policy decision should also weigh the effects on investment and domestic demand.

The agency raised its 2011 inflation forecast to 3.6%-4% from 3%-3.5% and forecast a trade surplus this year of $8 billion—-down from $10.4 billion—and a current account surplus of $8.8 billion, down from $11.2 billion.

My shots from the Mustang always include the hood scoop.

After a "Big 3" meeting, I was had the day off for some fun with my six year old daughter. We took my Mustang out to Woodward and then Cranbrook Science Center for a picnic and learning. Picked up the wife from work in Southfield and headed back to cruise. Started at 8 Mile early on and finished the Pontiac loop during the late evening. Great night and my daughter loved it...until it got cold after dusk and the top NEVER goes up.

Obama confronted after town hall by 'tea party' activist

Ryan Rhodes asks President Obama a question

Iowa "tea party" activist Ryan Rhodes asks President Obama a question about whether Vice President Joe Biden likened tea party activists to terrorists during the debt-ceiling talks. (Jim Watson/AFP)

Reporting from Decorah, Iowa—

President Obama heard from critics on both the right and the left at his town-hall event in Decorah on Monday evening.

An Iowa "tea party" activist, Ryan Rhodes, confronted Obama after the event to speak to him whether Vice President Joe Biden during the debt-ceiling talks in Washington compared tea-party affiliated lawmakers to terrorists.

Rhodes first brought up the question during the town hall and then approached the president afterward and the two got into a heated exchange. (Watch video below.)

He complained to Fox News afterward that Obama had not addressed the question whether Biden actually made the remarks. Reports at the time had another member of Congress, Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, actually saying the word “terrorists” and Biden agreeing. But the vice president's office denied that Biden ever used the term.

“He just denied it. He said the vice president didn't make any of those assertions,” Rhodes said. “If he doesn’t want to even admit what was on TV nationally -- all over the place -- then how can you have a conversation?”

Obama also faced criticism during the event from Emily Neal of Decorah, who openly questioned his negotiating skills with Republicans and asked whether the president had abandoned liberals in the healthcare and debt-ceiling fights and in extending the Bush-era tax cuts.

The president responded by saying that the political reality of governing had forced him to make choices.

“My job as president goes beyond just winning the political argument. I’ve got a whole bunch of responsibilities, which means I have to make choices sometimes that are unattractive and I know will be bad for me politically and I know will get supporters of mine disappointed,” he said.

Later, he added, “The bottom line is we’re moving in the right direction. But I know it’s frustrating, because the other side is unreasonable. And you don’t want to -- you don’t want to reward unreasonableness. Look, I get that. But sometimes you’ve got to make choices in order to do what’s best for the country at that particular moment, and that’s what I’ve tried to do.”

Clowns, Naked Ladies and Plenty of Beer

[SP_PARTY] Geoffrey A. Fowler

Lululemon party at Club Bud

VANCOUVER, British Columbia—There were parties galore at the Winter Games, from intimate corporate shindigs to flashy red-carpet affairs. By far the most exclusive one happened on the rink at Canada Hockey Place, where the Canadian women's hockey team celebrated on the ice—with beer and cigars—after their gold-medal win over the U.S. on Thursday.

Over the past two weeks, Wall Street Journal reporters scattered to sample the best—and most Canadian—of parties. One constant: beer. The luckiest parties lured "The Great One," Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.

WSJ's Jessica Marmor talks with Olympic silver medalists Katherine Reutter and Charlie White, and freestyle skier Scotty Bahrke, at the Club Bud Lululemon party in Vancouver.

Here's how we judged them, on a scale of one maple leaf (a dud) to four (a bash):

Club Bud Lululemon

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

This star-studded nightclub boasted a red carpet and bumping dance floor. Countless athletes stopped by, including ice-dancing gold-medal winners Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, plus the rock group Barenaked Ladies. Food: Budweiser and more Budweiser.

Sochi World

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

Downstairs had exhibits on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. Upstairs, clowns cavorted and guests taste-tested five varieties of vodka. VIPs included Prince Albert of Monaco and—best of all—Mr. Gretzky.

Irish House

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf1_A]

Americans aren't the only ones who reduce Irish culture to beer and bagpipes. No celebrities showed up when we were there—not even an Irish athlete on this particular night, though, to be fair, Ireland has only six competitors here. Molson and Guinness on tap, but not a Canadian—or Irish—delicacy in sight.

Molson Canadian Hockey House

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf2_A]

A Canadian frat party multiplied by 10. Plenty of celebrities showed up, including Mr. Gretzky and hockey stars Grant Fuhr and Lanny McDonald. Comedian Seth Meyers, rock god Bryan Adams and actor Donald Sutherland also were there. No surprises on the buffet: Canadian beer, cheese and wine.

Holland Heineken House

Part Disneyland, part beer garden, part high-school gym. When speed skating was on, the place filled up with orange-clad mobs hoping for another Dutch medal. The Dutch royal family, Dutch athletes and Dutch artists ate potato-sauerkraut "hotchpotches," which turned out to be mashed potatoes with a hot dog. Tasty anyway.

Ritzy passenger cars with glass-roofed upper decks. Most cars were leased to corporations for private schmoozing on this three-hour Vancouver-to-Whistler trip. A bevy of Albertan officials rode the train, feasting on "mountain pass pancakes" made with Aprikat beer.

Amsterdam Gay Pride 2011 - Pink White Pink

photo

Amsterdam Gay Pride 2011 - Pink White Pink

People at the 2011 Gay Pride Canal Parade in Amsterdam last weekend. Taken with my Sony HX1.

Last weekend Amsterdam hosted the 'Gay Pride' again and Saturday we had the famous canal parade, where hundreds of happy, pretty and mostly gay people float through the city center on boats while the heterosexual rest of the country comes to admire them and wish they could shag their brains out for one whole beautiful, guilt-free weekend, haha. Unfortunately it rained most of the day, but I managed to go outside in one of the dry periods and snap some shots for your entertainment, I hope you like them :)

I've made some movies of the Gay Pride Canal Parade, check them out on my YouTube channel, thank you :)

Yankees telecasts are not O-Kay at all

headshotPhil Mushnick

"Alex Rodriguezleads off, here in the Mohegan Sun, Powerball, Borgata, World Series of Poker, New York Lottery, Scratch and Win Sixth Inning, brought to you by Yonkers Raceway and Casino, 'What happens in Las Vegas stays in Foxwoods.'

"Alex, as I'm sure you know, recently was investigated by MLB for gambling."

Another one of those weeks, ya know?

Friday's Yankees-Red Sox was such a can't-miss, according to YES, that it stuck to its come-hell-or-high-water script, turning the visitors' half of the third inning into the Kim Jones I'm Over Here Stadium Report. Did it matter that the Yankees and Red Sox were tied for first in the AL East and the game was 0-0? Well . . . nah.

MISSED IT! Anyone tuning in to watch Mark Teixeira and the Yankees play Carl Crawford and the Red Sox on Friday had to sit through Michael Kay's (<a href=inset) annoying, YES-approved schtick. MISSED IT! Anyone tuning in to watch Mark Teixeira and the Yankees play Carl Crawford and the Red Sox on Friday had to sit through Michael Kay's (inset) annoying, YES-approved schtick.

Jones -- and she's as much a victim of this system as we are -- reported no decision had been made on Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes was scheduled to start Tuesday, but not if he was used out of the bullpen in Boston, she's not sure why Joe Girardi would use Hughes out of the bullpen, and A.J. Burnett was not going to the bullpen.

So, with the biggest game of the season going on, no score, YES had Jones report three "not sures" and one "definitely not" -- all of which could have been said at any time from the booth.

To this Michael Kay responded, "Fascinating stuff, Kim."

But Kay is easily fascinated. There is no statistic he won't recite as significant, as if, writes reader Bud Musso, "He just found a pearl in his oyster."

In Friday's opening, Kay gushed that this was the first time the Yankees opened a series against Boston while on a seven-game winning streak since 1963!

Something like that can be found about every team -- "First time since 1978 the Orioles have come into Kansas City after splitting a series with Oakland" -- but not everyone would consider such things wow-worthy.

Friday's Yankees-Red Sox, a 3-2 final, ran 3:26. Rome was built faster. This was one of those drag-ons that Kay used to lament as "unmanageable." Funny, when umpire Joe West took a shot at the Yankees and Red Sox for stretching games, he was pounded. But he was right.

In Kay, those who wanted to see some pace restored to games had a steady advocate. For years, Kay jabbed MLB on the air for serving tryptophan-laced baseball. Right on, Mike!

But then one day, on YES, Kay said the opposite. He not only claimed he has no problem with games that run 3:30 and longer, he ridiculed those who do. What the hay?!

He performed this stunning 180 without providing even the slightest hint he ever had held the reverse view. He spoke as if YES's viewers would be too stupid to know or recall better.

In Nigeria, a Big Oil Toll

[NIGERIA] Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

oil spills have fouled drinking water in the Niger Delta. Above, a man in the Ogoniland region last year.

A landmark United Nations study into the long-term environmental impact of oil production in Nigeria says that oil spills have led to acute health risks for area residents and widespread environmental damage that may take as many as 30 years and $1 billion to clean up.

The report released Thursday also shines a spotlight on the activities of Royal Dutch Shell PLC, which for years drilled in the area and which funded the report.

More

U.N. Study: Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland

"The oil industry has been a key sector of the Nigerian economy for over 50 years, but many Nigerians have paid a high price, as this assessment underlines," said Achim Steiner, U.N. under-secretary general and the executive director of the U.N. Environment Program, which carried out the report.

The study, which focused on one small region of the vast Niger Delta and was commissioned by the Nigerian government and funded by Royal Dutch Shell, found that drinking water in at least 10 communities was contaminated with hydrocarbons and that the contamination went as deep as five meters below ground in some places. Shell no longer operates in the studied area.

Mr. Steiner said the report provided the scientific basis on which a long-overdue environmental restoration of the area, known as Ogoniland, can begin. The report recommends establishing three institutions in Nigeria, including a cleanup fund, to underpin the restoration effort. The fund would require a total of $1 billion contributed by the oil industry and government for the first few years, according to the report.

UNEP presented the report to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday. Mr. Jonathan "made it clear that the government would take appropriate steps to make sure issues raised in the report would be addressed," said government spokesman Ruben Abati.

At least four Shell executives were present when the report was handed over, according to Mr. Abati.

Separately this week, Shell said that its Nigerian joint venture will begin out-of-court settlement talks with a Nigerian community affected by a 2008 oil spill. The law firm representing the community said that compensation could be in the tens of millions of dollars.

The renewed focus on Shell's activities in Nigeria comes as the Anglo-Dutch oil major seeks to reduce its onshore footprint in the West African nation. Shell is in the process of selling its stake in four onshore fields, including one for which the top bidder offered $1.3 billion.

Shell's onshore Nigeria operations have long been beset by sabotage and theft, and the company has faced decades of criticism from environmental and human-rights groups concerned about the impact its activities have had on the local ecosystem. "Even we were amazed by the depth of the pollution detailed in the report" by the U.N., said Evan Hassink of the environment watchdog group Friends of the Earth.

Shell says the vast majority of the pollution in its Nigeria operations in recent years has been caused by oil theft and militant attacks. For its Nigeria operations, it says an equivalent of 102,000 barrels of oil were spilled into the Niger Delta in 2009 as a direct result of sabotage or theft.

"All oil spills are bad—bad for local communities, bad for the environment, bad for Nigeria and bad for SPDC," said Mutiu Sunmonu, the managing director of Shell's joint venture, Shell Petroleum Development Co. of Nigeria, or SPDC, in a written statement. "Although we haven't produced oil in Ogoniland since 1993, we clean up all spills from our facilities, whatever the cause, and restore the land to its original state."

The mangrove-lined swamps of the delta region have been hit by thousands of oil spills since oil production began there in the 1960s, and the country has almost nonexistent response capabilities.

In the field offices of Nigeria's National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, workers receive near-daily calls from villagers complaining of spills. The spill-response agency said it had recorded about 2,405 oil spills involving all the major international oil companies operating in Nigeria between 2006 and June 2010.

West African countries have some of the world's least-rigorous regulatory schemes, watchdog groups say. The agency relies on oil companies to follow up and inspect the spill sites.

After the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, BP PLC says it and the U.S. government marshaled an armada of 6,000 ships and 100 aircraft to battle that oil spill.

West Africa's standing response team consists of a single small plane, based in Ghana, and a few boats.
