Sunrise in Owens Valley and the Sierra Nevada, California, USA

Browsing through pictures from last year, the Eastern Sierra continues to fascinate me. The 3000+ m high wall rising up from Owens Valley, that's something very special.

We had some bad luck with the weather, being there for only three days, almost continously raining, but the last morning was great. The sky had cleared up, and the locations I scouted beforehand got a visit again in order to capture the early morning.

I posted another picture of the same session a while ago, this is a different approach in terms of composition. Vertical, in order to emphasize both the foreground as well as the sky, without getting too "wide anglish", resulting in a distorted relation between fore- and background.

Great Britain handed tough EuroBasket draw

Great Britain handed tough EuroBasket draw

The Great Britain basketball squad have it all to do at the European Championships in Lithuania in September after, for the second competition in a row, being drawn in comfortably the toughest pool.

Brendan Gallagher

By Brendan Gallagher 10:58PM GMT 30 Jan 2011

Brendan's Twitter

Great Britain have been drawn in Pool A and will line up against Spain, hosts Lithuania, Turkey, Poland and a final qualifier who has yet to be determined.

Spain, the reigning champions having won the title in Poland, will host Lithuania who reached the semi-finals of last year's World Championship and Turkey who went all the way to the final before losing out to USA.

Poland are a solid middle ranking European side who Great Britain will certainly have to beat if they are to stand any chance of reaching the knock-out stages.

"It's a hell of a draw but I'm more excited than intimidated," says Drew Sullivan, the Great Britain captain. "The match which makes you swallow a bit hard is having to take the hosts on in front of 14,000 home fans. That is going to be a very tough assignment. Lithuania are a top quaility side anyway and we saw in Turkey last year how the home crowd advantage can lift their side to new hights.

"But to be honest we are not frightened anymore having to play the likes of Spain, Turkey and Lithuania. We have come a long way in the last three of four years and gave a good account of ourselves in Poland in 2009 when we had a squad weakened by injury.

"With a bit of luck we will have everybody available this time around and we know what we will have to do. Basically we are going to need one massive scalp, the biggest win in our history, to get a top three position progess but that's the sort of territory we are in now. We are playing at elite level and there will be no easy matches."

Great Britain are expecting Ben Gordon, the Detroit Pistons guard, to be fully available this summer to augment the squad which did a good job in qualifying for the European Championships last summer when they won six of their eight matches.

One small factor in their favour is that, unlike in Poland in 2009, Great Britain should not be playing under the extra pressure of having to earn their right to compete in the Olympics. That, one-way or another, should have been settled by September.

FIBA, having moved the goalposts on three separate occasions already, have now promised a final decision at the their next General Committee meeting which is in March when factor such as the long term future of the sport in Great Britain will be taken into account as well as their playing improvement in recent seasons.

Pool A: Spain, Turkey, Great Britain, Poland, qualifier

Lehman Unveils New Plan to Repay Creditors

NEW YORK—Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. unveiled details of a new plan to distribute its assets, a proposal backed by its unsecured-creditors committee that would give creditors a better recovery than the investment bank's original plan disclosed last spring.

The new plan, however, disregards key elements of a competing plan filed by a group of bondholders last month.

In a filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan on Tuesday night, Lehman said creditors holding senior unsecured claims against the collapsed Wall Street bank would recover 21.4% of their claims under the new plan, up from 14.7%. Those creditors must vote for the plan to get the full recovery. If they vote against the plan, those creditors would get less. Creditors of several Lehman subsidiaries may see even better recoveries.

Lehman President and Chief Operating Officer John Suckow said in an interview that in the months leading up to the plan, "we have met with virtually every major stakeholder group around the world. We've received an awful lot of input."

Lehman hopes to have the plan confirmed by a bankruptcy judge by year's end. Some details of the plan:

• General unsecured creditors of the company's commercial-paper unit can expect to recover just under 51 cents on the dollar, up from between 29 cents and 44 cents on the dollar in the plan filed last March, a plain-language reading of which was disclosed last April.

• Unsecured creditors of the firm's commodities business will recover about 50 cents on the dollar, up from a range of about 26 to 27 cents on the dollar.

• Unsecured creditors of Lehman's special-finance unit, the heart of much of Lehman's derivatives business, can expect to recover about 22 cents on the dollar, little changed from a prior range of between 22 cents and 24 cents on the dollar. Those creditors could get more if they have claims against the Lehman parent.

The amended plan, Mr. Suckow said, involves "many architects" and handles Lehman as 23 different subsidiaries that will pay creditors back from their distinct pools of assets, like its original plan filed last spring. Some key creditors, including a group of bondholders that filed a competing plan last month, had argued that Lehman should be treated as a single entity.

That group of senior noteholders, including hedge-fund manager Paulson & Co., last month filed its own plan for Lehman that would provide a better recovery to creditors of the original Lehman parent company—including more than 24 cents on the dollar for senior bondholders—while offering a smaller payout to some creditors of Lehman subsidiaries.

Lehman said earlier this month that it would incorporate some of that group's ideas into its plan, but in its Tuesday filing said it doesn't support the plan.

"The ad hoc plan, if pursued, would engender significant opposition and litigation, and would result in increased expenses and delay in the debtors' Chapter 11 cases," Lehman said in its filing.

A person with knowledge of the ad hoc group's thinking couldn't immediately comment.

Lehman estimated earlier this month that it would have $322 billion in allowed claims against the estate, with $272 billion from the parent company and about $50 billion from its subsidiaries. The bank increased creditors' expected net recovery by $2.6 billion from the $57.5 billion it estimated in a September court presentation.

Judge James Peck of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan asked Mr. Suckow earlier this month if the plan will have immediate support of key creditors or if that support is something Lehman hopes to achieve over time.

Mr. Suckow said then that he hoped to at least have support of the unsecured-creditors committee, and on Wednesday, in his interview, he called their support "important."

Lehman hopes to give its counterparties a comprehensive view of how much they should expect to recover by April 30.

Last spring, Lehman unveiled details of its original plan to pay back creditors. That proposal included a number of intercompany settlements, as does the new plan.

The original plan, which allowed claims against a particular debtor, would have been paid from the assets of that debtor, with recoveries for unsecured creditors ranging from about 10 cents on the dollar to 44 cents.

"The fundamental difference between the March plan and this plan is that all creditors are being asked to give up something," Mr. Suckow said.

Holders of third-party guarantee claims and derivative claims, for example, would see a portion of their recovery allocated to those with claims against the Lehman parent.

Lehman's collapse in September 2008 marked the largest bankruptcy case ever filed. Since then, a team of hundreds of bankruptcy professionals under the direction of restructuring firm Alvarez & Marsal have managed Lehman's assets, which include real-estate holdings, corporate debt and derivatives, for the benefit of creditors.

5 Tips to Keep Exercising in the Bitter Cold

As the winter days drag on and on, and temperatures seem to drop further and further, exercise may become harder and harder to enjoy. It’s at this time of the year that we all can empathize with the big bear who hibernates through winter to conserve energy. Unfortunately, our bodies DON’T hibernate and we continue to eat and drink, just as we do during the warmer months…or maybe even more. As a result, staying active can be even more important to one’s health during the winter.

Although the cold, dark days may not be calling you out of bed to get to the gym, maybe these simple tips will help you enjoy exercise, even when temperatures seem unbearable:

Find a Workout Partner: If you made a New Year’s resolution to be healthier, you may feel your resolution fading. Buddy up with a friend and help one another stick with your resolutions by working out together. It will make it more fun and enjoyable, you’ll feel more accountable for each others’ success, and most importantly, you’ll reap the healthy benefits of pushing one another to stick with your program.

Set a Goal: Set a goal to reach by a specific date in spring. Maybe you want to lose ten pounds by March 21st, the spring equinox. Maybe you want to gain some muscle. Or maybe, you want to be able to run three miles without running out of breath. Whatever your goal is, setting one will give you something to strive for, to be accountable for, and better yet, give you purpose to your exercising.

Schedule Adjustments: Just because you love to exercise in the morning during the summer doesn’t mean that you might like it as much in the winter. Forcing yourself to do something at a time of day that isn’t enjoyable won’t help matters. Adjust your schedule so that you are more apt to workout as seasons change.

Find a Winter Sport You Love: If the gym is completely unappealing, and you are more of an outdoors exerciser, then you may very well want to take up a winter sport. Sports such as down-hill skiing, snowboarding, snow-shoeing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing, are all great for staying in shape and burning extra calories.  Or, if you like team sports, sign up for an ice hockey league. Try one or two of these until you find something you enjoy.

Seasonally Appropriate Gear: If you are still wearing summer weight workout gear, you may be making it more painful than necessary. Make sure that you are wearing winter appropriate gear so that the chill doesn’t feel as painful as it needs to.

How do you keep enjoying exercise in the winter? Have you done any of these to keep you interested?

St. Peter's beats Manhattan, 62-53

Nick Leon scored 19 points and Ryan Bacon pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Saint Peter's to a 62-53 win over Manhattan on Sunday.

The Peacocks (11-9, 6-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) made only nine field goals inside the 3-point line, but finished 9 of 18 from 3-point range and clamped down on defense to preserve the victory.

Darius Conley added 12 points for St. Peter's, which shot 29.2 percent in the opening half (7 of 24) and trailed 26-25 at the break.

Manhattan (3-17, 1-8) outscored the Peacocks in the paint 26-12, but was held to 20-of-63 shooting from the floor (31.7 percent), including 2 of 11 from beyond the arc (18.2 percent).

George Beamon scored 12 points and was the only player in double figures for the Jaspers, who have lost 17 of their last 18 games after starting the season 2-0.

The Peacocks outrebounded Manhattan 48-36.

Facebook soaring

Facebook ad revenue could grow by more than 40 percent next year to nearly $6 billion, with non-US sales equaling US revenue for the first time, according to a new projection from eMarketer.

The leap, to $5.74 billion in 2012, comes on the top of a 118 percent jump this year, to an estimated $4.05 billion, from 2010, eMarketer said.

The Web measurement firm revised its 2010 ad revenue number for Facebook up from $1.3 billion to $1.86 billion because of Facebook's explosive growth between August and the end of the year.

It also suggests that Facebook earned some $140 million last year.

Around 60 percent of Facebook's ad revenue comes from the company's self-serve system, which displays ads on the right side of each page.

The rest is derived from home-page display advertising.

Debra Aho Williamson, principal analyst on social marketing for eMarketer, said her data is drawn from both ad agency spenders.

"Much of their growth has come from international markets. They're No. 1 in a lot of countries, except China, where they're blocked," she said.

According to her analysis, total US social network ad revenue in 2011 will grow by 55 percent to $3.08 billion -- $2.19 billion of which goes to Facebook.

After Facebook, the biggest operators in social media are MySpace, LinkedIn, Classmates.com and Twitter. MySpace is owned by News Corp., which also owns The Post.

One source familiar with Facebook's business said the growth was all the more impressive given that "Facebook hasn't really been innovating with its ad products.

"They've been fine-tuning the targeting. The biggest thing that could drive growth is to start an ad network, but they've always denied they're developing a network."

The top advertisers in social media, according to ComScore impressions data for the third quarter, are: AT&T, InterActive Corp. and Make-My-Baby.com.

Other Top 10 spenders include Verizon Communications, Google, Disney and AOL. catkinson@nypost.com

U.S. Wins Gold, Silver in Nordic Combined

[nordic0225] Associated Press

Johnny Spillane, left, and Bill Demong during the cross country portion of the men's Nordic combined

WHISTLER, British Columbia -- With 600 meters to go, Billy Demong decided it was time once and for all to make the U.S. takeover of Nordic combined official.

With four quick strokes of his poles on a nasty uphill stretch at Whistler Olympic Park, Mr. Demong surged into the lead in the 10-kilometer cross country race that marks the culmination of Nordic combined.

The surge marked the end of the challenge for Austria's Bernhard Gruber, who had started the race in the lead after winning the morning jumping competition and skied gallantly with Mr. Demong and his teammate, Johnny Spillane, throughout the race. But within seconds, Mr. Gruber was drifting backwards and Messrs. Demong and Spillane were searing along the final downhill into the stadium for a historic gold-and-silver finish to the roars of fans from nations that once scorned American efforts to compete in Nordic sports.

View Full Image

demong0225

AFP/Getty Images

Bill Demong of the U.S. competes in the Nordic Combined individual large hill.

demong0225

demong0225

"When you go there is only one way to go," Mr. Demong said minutes after the race. "We show up on days like today with the expectation to do well and knowing that results like this are a realistic possibility."

Mr. Demong finished the race in 25:32.9 after finishing sixth in a jumping competition marred by wind and poor weather. That relegated him to a start 46 seconds behind Mr. Gruber. Mr. Spillane finished four seconds after Mr. Demong after starting 36 seconds behind Mr. Gruber.

The two medals, combined with a silver in the team competition and another silver in the normal hill-10 kilometer event, gave the U.S. 44% of the medals in the discipline, one of its best showings in any sport at the Winter Games. And with Germany nipping at Team USA's heels in the overall medal count, if the U.S. prevails, Nordic combined will have played a major role.

Suggesting such an outcome 10 or 15 years ago to anyone with a scintilla of knowledge of this sport's history would have seemed at best silly and more likely absurd. In 1988, when Nordic combined first became an Olympic sport, the U.S. finished at the bottom of the heap, and the team operated on a shoestring budget for years after that.

But former coach Tom Steitz started focusing on developing a few promising athletes, and among the first were Messrs. Demong and Spillane, along with Todd Lodwick, who finished 13th Thursday and in the ultimate team-first move, spent much of the race holding off the chase-pack, giving his teammates the comfort of knowing they were skiing only against Mr. Gruber for position on the podium.

"Everyone always said for the U.S. to win the Winter Games the Nordic sports would have to step up," Mr. Lodwick said. "We can't step up any more than we did."

At World Cup events in the 1990s, organizers would make the Americans change and prep their skis in the parking lot. European competitors would conspire to give them only a few shots at training on the ski jumps. Shortly after Mr. Demong crossed the finish line he grabbed Mr. Steitz and reminded him of the training trip 15 years ago when they spent the night in an East German mental institution because it offered a bed and a meal for $14.

"That's what we had to do back then," Mr. Steitz said Thursday. "We didn't have any choice."

But Thursday's win was a long way from those grubby beginnings.

Thursday the only choice left for Messrs. Demong and Spillane was when to put away Mr. Gruber. The teammates talked to each other throughout the race, taking turns in the lead, speeding up and slowing down the pace, teasing Mr. Gruber along. Then came the final hill and Mr. Demong's last surge, one final message that this was his team's event.

"We wanted to be alone, just the two of us," Mr. Demong said. "I don't think either of us even cared who finished first, just as long as we were one-two."qtdz

Andrew Marr highlights 'disgrace' of Melvyn Bragg's sacking by the BBC

Andrew Marr, who succeeded Melvyn Bragg as the presenter of Radio 4's Start the Week, says Bragg felt that the way he was treated by the BBC was a 'bloody disgrace'.

Andrew Marr may owe his position on the Radio 4 programme Start the Week to the removal of Melvyn Bragg, but he has spoken out about the BBC's treatment of its former presenter.

"Melvyn was incredibly dignified and stoic when he was sacked, but he was badly hurt," says Marr. "He never did, publicly, say it was a bloody disgrace, but he certainly felt it."

The BBC said it dropped Bragg to maintain political impartiality after he became a Labour peer, but when Sir Alan Sugar was later elevated to the Lords by Gordon Brown, he was allowed to stay on The Apprentice.

Lord Bragg said: "I wasn't political at all and the programme wasn't political. I didn't complain in public or much in private. I had 10 great years, but, yes, I was pushed. It was the first time I had ever been fired.

"I was put in the House of Lords as a Labour peer and the powers that be thought that being put in the House of Lords as a working peer wasn't consonant with presenting Start the Week. I was asked to leave and that was that."

Tony Blair's sports charity needs faith

Tony Blair made a profit of at least £710,000 last year from his mysterious web of companies, but one of his charities seems to have fared less well.

Mandrake learns that the Tony Blair Sports Foundation, which the former prime minister established in 2007 "to give something back to the North East", raised a total of £348,233 during its first period, until March 2010.

The figures are in stark contrast to those for another of his charities, the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, which, its latest accounts disclose, enjoyed an income of £3.7 million in its second year.

Winchester House 2

photo

Winchester House 2

Legend says that Sarah Winchester talked to a psychic, who told her that her family had been cursed by the souls of those killed by the Winchester rifles. To appease those vengeful spirits, Sarah was to go West, buy a house, and keep building. Building forever, the psychic supposedly told Sarah, would enable her to live forever. In 1884, Sarah moved from Connecticut and purchased an eight-room farmhouse in what is now San Jose, where she began building.
